The Founding Vision – Lenny, Mike, and a Three-Year Winning Streak

The Lazy Landlord was established in December 2014 by brothers Lenny and Mike Henry. Seeking to create a traditional, no-frills drinking establishment, they pioneered the micropub concept on the Wirral peninsula, converting a former music store on Mill Lane.

The name, “The Lazy Landlord,” was inspired by a light-hearted nickname given to Lenny, and it perfectly set the tone for the relaxed, comfortable atmosphere the brothers fostered. Their vision was simple: focus squarely on the quality of cask ale and the atmosphere of friendly conversation. The interior reflects this ethos, adorned with classic breweriana, local art, and a small library, deliberately excluding modern distractions like televisions, loud music, and fruit machines.

Their uncompromising commitment to real ale excellence was swiftly recognized. Under Lenny and Mike’s tenure, The Lazy Landlord achieved remarkable success, being named Wirral CAMRA Pub of the Year for an unprecedented three consecutive years, solidifying the pub’s legendary status. They built not just a pub, but a true community hub, hosting diverse groups from allotment societies to “Pop-Up Poets.

The Next Generation – Joe Bryan, Custodian and Curator

Joe took over the reins from founders Lenny and Mike Henry in late 2023. His journey at The Lazy Landlord began in 2016 as a barman, he fell instantly in love with the pub’s unique spirit, its incredible customers and the founders’ vision. Joe’s mission became one of protection and dedicated evolution of this special place.

Joe’s passion is rooted in customer service and genuine hospitality. For him, running The Lazy Landlord is about creating an atmosphere where everyone feels genuinely welcome, seen, and served with excellence. This dedication is matched by a deep-seated commitment to the pub’s core product: real ale. With a decade of experience, Joe brings both skill and passion to the crucial task of looking after the beer, ensuring every single cask is handled, conditioned, and served with the perfection it deserves.

This high standard of commitment stems from a personal place. As someone with autism, ADHD and a lifetime managing anxiety and depression, Joe brings a unique focus and intensity to the business. While his mental health can occasionally make things tricky, it fuels his perfectionism and his desire to make The Lazy Landlord a sanctuary—a neuro-nurturing space where the quality drinks and the simple ritual of conversation bring calm and connection to everyone who walks through the door.
